4 Tips to Help New Residents Adjust

May 27, 2022

You decided to move into a senior living home. As in any life change, there are multiple factors to consider. The previous home is sold, the furniture moved, and the personal items unpacked. Now what? New residents often find themselves wondering what to do next. Transitions are often bitter-sweet, but there are ways to help the experience be as smooth as possible. Senior living communities, such as Beacon Crest Senior Living, offer many activities to help adjust to the new way of life. Here are a few tips when making this transition.

SETTLE INTO YOUR NEW HOME
There will be time to try new things. Residents find the importance of first setting up their new home to bring comfort. Displaying family photos, treasured keepsakes, and favorite artwork can immediately make the new space feel like home. Once everything is unpacked, take some time to familiarize yourself with the walking paths, which drawer holds your favorite pajamas, and where you put that phone charger. After a day of new experiences, it can be nice to return to your new home and enjoy feeling cozy.
MAKE NEW FRIENDS
Moving day is over. The new home is decorated and comfortable. It is time to open that door and get to know the other residents. Are you feeling shy? The staff is there for you. Senior living staff help with medical needs, daily requests, activities, and meals. They would be happy to make the introductions to your new neighbors. Established residents are often excited to meet the new kid. Before you know it, you will be sharing life stories, daily updates, and plenty of laughter. Before too much time passes, another new resident will have moved in. How wonderful to be the one to help them feel welcome.
JOIN THE ACTIVITIES
Activities are offered every day at senior homes. Time is scheduled for crafts, trivia games, Bingo, movie nights, and countless more. Are you not a fan of participating in karaoke? You can still attend the event and enjoy the camaraderie while listening to residents sing their favorite songs. Have you not had time to work on your crafting skills? Now is a perfect time. Joining the activities is not about being experienced at something. New experiences are about creating opportunities for friendship, the possibility for growth, and carving space for joy.
OUTSIDE SOCIAL LIFE
To balance these new events in life, residents find it beneficial to keep an outside social life. It is so exciting to meet new people and have new experiences. Meeting up with family members or previous neighbors allows time to share stories of your new adventures. Your old life has not ended; it has expanded. Senior homes, such as Beacon Crest Senior Living, offer family and friends events so you can spend time with everyone. As time goes on, you might be amazed how much room your heart has for new friends and experiences while treasuring your time with friends and family.
