Downsizing? 5 Tips To Help You On Your Journey

November 6, 2021

You did it! You decided to downsize from your current home. Maybe this is a move into a smaller home, or you have decided to lessen your daily responsibilities and move into an assisted living community. No matter where this journey leads, it is time to facilitate change. What comes next? How do you begin the process? While you are looking forward to your new chapter, you may be dreading the moving process. If you find this task daunting, we have some ideas to help you along your journey.

MEASURE YOUR NEW LIVING SPACE

We cannot stress the importance of knowing the exact measurements of where you are moving. How many times have you thought that desk would probably fit only to find out the space is three inches too narrow? Measuring the new home will help you decide which furniture to take and which to sell or donate. Who knows? It may be time to get that new bed you have always wanted. Another possibility is to reimagine your items. That storage chest might make the perfect coffee table in your new place. Let your imagination guide you, and enjoy the possibilities!

ORGANIZE AND DECLUTTER

It is time to organize the items in your home. KEEP/SELL/DONATE/TRASH are the most recognized staples of moving and organization. Whether you create sections or have disposable bins ready, each category to divide your items. As you begin the process, it is easiest to go one room at a time. After you accomplish the room organization, look through your KEEP pile and decide if you want to sell, donate, or recycle to reduce your items.

ENVISION YOUR NEW LIFESTYLE

Are you moving somewhere warm? Maybe you will not need all of those sweaters. Will you have limited space in your living area? Consider digitizing your music collection, photo collection, or memorabilia. Are you looking forward to starting a new hobby? Make sure to leave room for the new tennis rackets in your closet. This process is not just packing up your belongings; this process includes embracing change while aligning your goals with your lifestyle.

MOVING DAY ASSISTANCE

Let’s be honest. Not many people enjoy moving furniture. Try to think back on the number of times you have moved your belongings or helped a friend move theirs. This opportunity might be the time to gather friends and family to support you during this location shift. You may consider recommendations and hire a moving company to tackle the large items. This change is a moment to celebrate. Consider throwing a farewell party at your home and promise a housewarming party at your new digs once you get settled. Some individuals have enjoyed walking through their homes before the move and shooting a video. If you ever feel nostalgic, you can re-watch the footage and keep that time and place in your memories. Who knows? It may serve as a reminder one day of how far you have come.
CELEBRATE YOUR NEW HOME
Whether it be a housewarming gathering of friends and family or time spent enjoying on your own, celebrate this new chapter. Visit your friends’ homes in your senior living community for inspiration. If you are not sure about furniture placement or decorating choices, remember you can always make alterations. We recommend utilizing your organizational techniques moving forward to prevent clutter from accumulating. Keeping your space clear will support your new chapter and encourage the making of new memories.
