Four Ideas to Celebrate Memorial Day for Older Adults

May 27, 2023

Memorial Day is for honoring and mourning the U.S. personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This time of year can be a special time to spend with family and friends. Many of us have close connections with those who serve in the military. We are all grateful for their sacrifices. Senior living communities, such as Beacon Crest Senior Living, schedule events to honor this special time including this special Memorial Day for Older Adults.
MOMENT OF SILENCE
In 2000, Congress passed an act for a moment of silence at 3 pm local time. It is called the National Moment of Remembrance Act which asks Americans to pause for one minute to remember those who have given their lives to the military service. This gesture is a simple yet heartfelt possibility in marking the occasion with older adults. Keep in mind the respect and gratitude we have for our armed forces.
MEMORIAL DAY PICNIC
Once respect has been paid to our men and women serving in the armed forces, it is time to celebrate together. Plan an outdoor or indoor picnic based on the environmental conditions of where you live. Indulge in American cuisines like hot dogs and corn-on-the-cob. Bake a cherry pie to finish off with lemonade for dessert.
PARADE EVENT
Who doesn’t love a parade? Parades can feel like a slice of Americana. What better way to celebrate this country and those who have fought and died for our freedom? Check your local city guides for upcoming events. Memorial Day celebrations are plenty and will help encourage a community atmosphere.
PATRIOTIC CRAFT
The day is coming to a close. We have paid our respects, attended parades, and filled up on picnic fare. What better activity to finish off the day than making a patriotic craft? This craft could be an embellished yellow ribbon to tie around the trees outside, a red poppy to symbolize remembrance and a peaceful future, or a precious photo of a close armed forces soldier. Whether you honor the day with family or at an event at a senior living home, such as Beacon Crest Senior Living, Memorial Day is the perfect time to pause and be grateful for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
