Finding joy can feel tricky at times. Whether feeling overworked, exhausted or stressed, a disconnection from our surroundings can form a fissure in life. The longer ignored, the more it can expand until burnout occurs. The good news is there are techniques to help realign attention with gratitude and joy. While facing change, such as moving into a senior living community, we have a few suggestions to enjoy each day.
JOURNAL
Reports show that journaling can help reduce stress and anxiety, increase inspiration, and strengthen memory. The act of writing can help build confidence, track growth, and improve communication skills. There is a multitude of ways to keep a journal. Many have found writing daily affirmations helps promote a positive outlook. Reflecting at the end of the day on what brought gratitude can shift the mind’s focus while helping to relax before bedtime. Another possibility is to write out what brings joy. Some prefer to separate the types of journals they keep; others like to include all aspects in one place. Whichever technique speaks to you, journaling creates an opportunity to connect to your joy.
SPEND TIME IN NATURE
A scientific report from June 2019 reports spending time in nature for at least two hours per week improves your health and wellbeing. Whether you live close to the wilderness or plan to utilize the green spaces in your local city, getting outside has many benefits. There is nothing like standing next to a majestic tree, spending time in the mountains, or breathing in salt air to be reminded the world is a magnificent place. Often the problems of the day seem to minimize after spending time outdoors while enjoying the fresh air. Another benefit is the absorption of Vitamin D from the sun. Vitamin D is often called the sunshine vitamin. It is beneficial for fighting disease, reducing depression, and strengthening bones. So get outside, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy time in nature!
EXERCISE
Endorphins are chemicals released by the body during exercise. These feel-good neurotransmitters interact with the brain and reduce stress and depression. In addition, the release of endorphins can encourage relaxation and increase feelings of joy. While the brain benefits from exercise, so does the body. Increased mobility in older adults, flexibility and strengthening are other positive effects. Are you concerned about stress on the joints? There are various types of exercise such as swimming, chair yoga, or a recumbent bicycle that encourage mobility without the negative aspect of joint stress.
BE PRESENT, BE GRATEFUL
How to connect with the present moment? Breathwork is a popular tool in the practice of mindfulness. While living through a busy day, we can forget to pause and take a few deep breaths. Breathing deep can lower blood pressure and increase energy while improving immunity. Imagine all of these benefits from just stopping for a few moments to breathe. Another technique to help connect to the present is to practice gratitude. Take a brief pause to think about the best part of your day. A few examples could be; time with family, nutritious meals, or laughter with friends. Studies have found that aging adults often feel isolated while living at home. There are many benefits in joining a senior living community to encourage friendship, socialization, and connection. Whether people, places, or things, being present and grateful can connect you to joy.
